| it's quite wonderful. It's really a shame the car audio world is so slow to adapt to newer, better sources like SACD and/or DVD audio. CarPCs sure do take care of most of that. hehe | |

| It really depends on several things, as to how good you might think a DVD-Audio recording is relative to a CD.
You sometimes have to change your perspective when listening to dedicated multi-channel recordings, as there is often a lot of information coming from behind and to the sides of the listeners. You are often "on the stage" with the performers, having instruments placed all around. Other recordings simply have the room effect in the surround channels, attempting to create a better illusion of being in the audience, with the performers on stage in front.
I've heard good and bad examples , and unfortunately, sometimes the mastering engineers take "too much" creative license when making a dedicated multi-channel recording. It can get pretty weird, especially when they take a long-time popular recording that we're all used to, and try to massage it into a surround recording.
Plus, designing a car audio system to accurately reproduce a multi-channel recording is just that much more difficult than two-channel. The rear speakers can't just be installed in the rear deck for example. They become an important part of the whole system, not simple reproducing ambience any longer, and must be installed accordingly.
I agree that it will be a great day when a good multi-channel format can be effectively, and consistently, used in cars. There are a few installations that I have heard that do a good job, most notably Gary Summers' Mercedes. He brought the car for the SQ Showcase at CES this year. It is a one seat system design, but it is the best sounding multi-channel system I've heard in a car.
But remember, there are some processors that can derive a multi-channel signal from a two-channel source. Some work better than others. When done correctly, they can help a well designed system sound much better with two-channel source material. Just be careful not to over-do it...

| Oh the owner of the mercades was gary summers? Damn that was an awesome sounding car. I got to listen to one song in stereo and "in the air tonight" by Phil Collins in 5.1 plus i got to bs with him a little bit. That was one of the highlights of CES for me
Hopefully one day i can have something that sounds as good as that but for now i just have a stereo 2.1 setup. Im close thou | |
