So I've got a second AP15001D in the mail, and I needed some advice on how to manage overpowered subs.
2 things happen with more power: more cone movement and more heat generated.
Smaller boxes and smaller ports will help increase air stiffness in the box... reducing cone movement.
How do you keep a sub chilly and unstinky?
BTW, the Pioneers have a 2.5" voice coil, that supposedly can handle 800 RMS / 2500 PEAK. Amps will give them 900-1000 each, but can be dialed back, if things get stinky.

good power shouldnt make much stink. my opinion is you will mechanically break the woofer.. neck joint..spiders etc with too much clean power way before and stinky cooking action.. i mean unless you have like 5k on a 2inch coil or somthing.. but even then, the mechanical limits should go 1st..

Thanks Alan!
The mechanical goodies on the Pioneers are a little different than a traditional woofer... so I'm curious how they'll react.
Pioneers do get stinky, but I'd be surprised if the coil failed thermally. My bet is on the "Smaller Cone" to VC former connection.
It'll happen at Finals, most likely... and Pioneer made it quite clear that they don't sell recones, even to competitors... way to support the sport, toolbags... I'll be swapping to a different brand next year. Plenty of good options, depending on my pocketbook.

That doesn't go there!!
Insert Rod "A" into Vented Pole Piece "B" ... those type of things always ends in a nasty rash

Just goofing around.
If subs do blow, and recones don't exist, it's hard to imagine what else you could mean by "I am always looking for stuff to dick around with"

Cool project! Old motor + cup + inner tube + resin = speaker.
I'm surprised it handled 500w on a little voice coil. The VC gap looked huge (for a 6.5") so I'm guessing you were able to fit a beefy coil in there (around the Coke can).
