| myth, the changes in temp make a battery loose voltage, a cement floor is cooler or hotter than a shelf | |

| myth, the cooler, more stable temperature of a concrete floor is supposed to actually be a better storage spot for a battery than a shelf. But hey, I'm the retard, don't listen to me. | |

True ! a few years ago I went to interstats batts, and the had 1000's of ALL the batts on the cement floor so I asked the same ? whats up with the batts on the floor and he said "with the Older batts like 20 years ago they did not have the same ABS as we do today".

| Storing your batteries on the ground WILL usually run them dead and ruin them.
Here's why,
First, cold temperatures... regardless of on a shelf or on the floor, freezing temperatures will cause the battery water/acid to expand ruining the plates , electrolytes, and permanent loss of capacity...UNLESS, there is a charge in the battery. This is why it's crucial to keep your batteries charged when storing them in freezing conditions. When the battery has a charge the electrolytes will not allow the battery to freeze, unless left out in the wind in Antarctica maybe haha. (actually I think its like -70 or so, but even -10 will cause the batts to freeze if under 50% charge)
Second, leaving batteries on the ground... The battery WILL in fact lose it's charge resulting in permanent loss of capacity if left on the ground, cement, floor ect., for extended periods of time, especially in cold weather conditions.
Here's why, the battery is constantly breathing, and while this happens electrolytes escape and end up on the outer case of the battery. Because the earth is a ground, this thin layer of grime completes a circuit between the positive post and the earth, which is ground. This is a short, a very weak short, but over a period of a few months it's enough to have run the battery dead.
It is crucial that before storing your battery, #1 Wash them thoroughly with soap and water. #2 Check the voltage, make sure it has a full charge, especially when leaving them in cold conditions.

| XFL, Yeah, the breathing analogy was a joke, (i thought it was funny) ...but acid on the outside of the battery will run a battery dead, it may sound unlikely but it's true. | |

| I was deep into the explaination. Thinking, someone is shedding some light on the subject. And all of a sudden, I broke out in laughter.
On a serious note. This is a myth that I have to explain often. Concrete floors are cold. They're normally poured on the ground which is 58-59 degrees. Their density will pull heat out of other objects. Batteries do not like being cold. And most people that put a battery on the floor, leave it there for a while. They come back months later and wonder why it's dead.
Maybe we can call Adam & Jamie to get their expert answer.
