a quick ? about box placement

i'm about to start building the box for my explorer, it's going to be a normal woofers up port back design. my question is how much clearance should i leave between the back side of the box (the port side) and the back hatch? i have two designs right now, one would only leave a few inches between the port and the hatch, and the other would be more like a foot.

what to you guys suggest?

Leave as much as possible and move the box back and forth while testing. Smile
